President Joko Widodo encouraged Muslims to make the most of the current Islamic year of 1446 to improve their faith and piety to the Almighty God.

His remarks were conveyed through his official Instagram account on the occasion of the 1446 H Islamic New Year, as observed here on Sunday.

“Let us welcome the 1446 Islamic year by improving our faith and piety to Allah SWT,” he stated.

Through his Instagram post that has amassed more than 41 thousand likes by Sunday afternoon, Jokowi expressed hope that peace, happiness, and success will be abundant in the current Islamic year.

“Happy Islamic New Year. I hope our steps will be blessed by Him,” the president said.

The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, was established in 622 CE to commemorate the Hijrah –the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina.

The Religious Affairs Ministry’s 2024 Indonesian Islamic Calendar declared the first day of the 1446 Islamic year to fall on Sunday, July 7. According to a joint ministerial statement passed earlier this year, Islamic New Year’s Day is declared a public holiday.

Meanwhile, Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas has urged all Muslims in Indonesia to mark the 1446 H Islamic New Year by reflecting on self-evaluation and self-improvement.

“At this valuable moment, let us all strengthen our gratitude to God for his countless blessings. Let the Hijrah inspire us to continuously improve ourselves and contribute meaningfully to our nation and religion,” Qoumas said in a statement on Saturday (July 6).

A resident of Sukamarga Village in Suoh Sub-district, West Lampung District, Lampung Province, survived a Sumatran tiger’s attack though he suffered serious injuries on his head, a police officer stated.

Owing to his injuries, Samanan, 41, was admitted to Liwa Public Hospital for medical treatment, West Lampung Police Chief Adjunct Sen. Coms. Ryky Widya Muharam remarked.

Muharam did not elaborate on when this human-wildlife conflict (HWC) occurred but informed ANTARA on being contacted from South Lampung on Monday that Samanan was attacked while working in his farmland.

Samanan fought against the tiger that attacked him and managed to escape. Owing to his serious injuries, he had to get admitted to the Suoh Public Health Center before being sent to the Liwa Public Hospital, Muharam stated.

In February this year, two local residents were killed by Sumatran tigers.

On Thursday, February 8, 2024, the West Lampung police officers evacuated the body of a resident of Sumber Agung Dua Hamlet in Sumber Agung Village, Suoh Sub-district.

Gunarso, 47, died after being attacked by a Sumatran tiger. In the early morning of Thursday, February 22, 2024, another resident was again attacked by a Sumatran tiger.

The 28-year-old resident of Bumi Hantati Village in Bandar Negeri Suoh Sub-district was also killed.

“His body part was found around 300 meters away from his farmland at 2 a.m. local time,” he stated while adding that the victim was only identified as S.

ANTARA reported earlier that Sumatran tigers, the smallest of all tigers, are currently a critically endangered species only found on Sumatra, Indonesia’s second-largest island.

Tigers are on the brink of extinction owing to deforestation, poaching, and conflicts between wild animals and local people due to their dwindling habitats.

Regarding the HWCs involving Sumatran tigers, the cases were not only found in Lampung but also in several other provinces in Sumatra Island.

The West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) recorded eight cases of HWCs in eight villages of Agam District from January to March 11, 2024.

Aceh Regional Police’s Special Criminal Investigation Directorate foiled an attempt to illegally trade the skin of a Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris) and its body parts in East Aceh district.

Chief of the Aceh Regional Police, Inspector General Achmad Kartiko, informed that two suspects were arrested in connection with the case in Banda Aceh on Monday.

“There are two suspected perpetrators whose roles were sales intermediaries. (The person) who caught and killed the Sumatran tiger is still under investigation,” he said.

The suspected culprits were identified as K, a 48-year-old civil servant worker posted at the Serbajadi Sub-district Office in East Aceh district, and M, a 24-year-old rice farmer from Seulemak village, East Aceh.

Kartiko said that they were arrested based on information provided by local communities about a planned tiger skin trade in Tualang, Peurelak sub-district, East Aceh, on January 19, 2024.

After receiving the information, police launched an investigation and found the suspects while they were waiting for a buyer inside a minibus. Police searched the minibus and found the Sumatran tiger’s skin, bones, and lower body parts.

“Based on a temporary investigation, K admitted to being an intermediary and M was the driver. The two were waiting for their tiger skin buyer,” the police chief said.

Currently, investigators are probing the two suspects’ involvement and trying to determine their network, including the person who hunted and caught the Sumatran tiger.

Investigators suspect that K and M violated Law Number 5 of 1990 on the Conservation of the Living Natural Resources and Its Ecosystem.

“The revelation of tiger skin trade is Aceh Regional Police’s commitment to take firm action in response to criminal acts against natural resources and ecosystem conservation,” Kartiko stated.

Meanwhile, an expert from the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Taing Lubis, said that the deceased tiger was a male and approximately 12 years old.

“Looking at its body parts, the process of catching the tiger was done by more than one experienced person because there are no conspicuous wounds. After the tiger was caught, the culprit immediately injected the tiger (with drugs) and skinned it,” Lubis added.

She informed that the deceased Sumatran tiger measured 2.6 meters. The protected animal is estimated to have died two weeks ago. Its death and skinning appear to have happened in quick succession.

“Tiger skinning cannot happen more than six hours (after death). After six hours, the skin will be damaged. It seems that the culprit is skilled and has done it more than once,” Lubis said.

The population of Sumatran tigers in the Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS), which spans four provinces including Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Jambi, and West Sumatra, is estimated to be above 150 tigers, according to an official.

“Overall, the Sumatran tiger population in the TNKS area remains relatively stable; they are spread in Jambi, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, and West Sumatra. The estimated number is between 150 to 180,” Head of Management Division for Bengkulu-South Sumatra Region III of TNKS M Mahfud said when contacted on Sunday.

He explained that the number is obtained from counting by utilizing camera traps, as well as based on the identifications of traces, feces, and scratches.

“So far, camera traps have proven to be the most accurate method. They allow us to identify the sex and assign names to individual tigers immediately,” he said.

He noted that the national park covers an area of 1,389,509.87 hectares, and 591,188 hectares of them are in Bengkulu and South Sumatra areas.

In Bengkulu Province, according to him, Sumatran tigers are still often seen but the details cannot be revealed to protect them from poaching.

In Bengkulu, Sumatran tigers are often seen in Lebong District, such as in Rimbo Pengadang, Ladang Palembang, Ketenong, and Bukit Resam areas, as well as in the Mukomuko District area.

According to Mahfud, there are also Sumatran tigers in the Rejang Lebong District area but they are only seen when they are crossing into Lebong District.

“They very rarely enter villages, meaning that the prey animals are still sufficient. That’s why we have an ecosystem restoration so that the ecosystem in the TNKS area can continue to function,” he said.

To maintain the Sumatran tiger population in the TNKS area, the park’s management has teams that carry out patrols every month to remove snares that are still often found in the Mukomuko area and in the Painan area, West Sumatra.
